Baseline testing used as concussion awareness grows

Concussions have been around forever, but until recently most have been going unnoticed and ignored. Concussions have been considered serious, and a huge problem lately in high schools during sports seasons. There have been multiple concussions in the area already this year. Once a athlete gets a concussion, in most cases they go back to the game before they have completely healed. This leads to worst concussions. In order to stop kids from returning to the game too early, schools have been enforcing a baseline test that determines how an athletes brain works when healthy. this new system of testing has prevent kids from getting worst concussions once they have been sitting out recovering. All students that participate in a sport are required to take the test before their season starts.

I believe that the concussion baseline test should be mandatory in all schools where students are involved in sports. I took my first concussion baseline test at the beginning of my sophomore year. This cognitive test seemed like a pain in the but at the time, but when April rolled around and i obtained a concussion, it was a great tool to have when i was ready to get back into the game. If the doctors were not able to compare my final results to my baseline i may have gone back too soon, wish would have lead to more serious problems. I am thankful for Mr.Coyle who made it mandatory to take this test because it effected my life in a huge way.

  1. People have been making concussions a huge deal recently. Why didn't people care as much before?

  2. Maybe it's because they are getting too serious and in some cases fatal. I knew a girl from my soccer team who had gotten too many concussions, that if she got one more, she could have died. She had to stop playing sports all together. Honestly the baseline test is a great tool and the athletes who take it need to be serious about it.
